TM Montante Development was awarded the Galanis Award for Excellence in Family Business on September 24th, 2013 at the Annual Galanis Awards Luncheon at the Adams Mark Hotel in Downtown Buffalo. Other recipients include Corfu Machine, EGW Personnel Staffing, and the Synergy Group. The Galanis Family, in its third generation of operating Sealing Devices in Lancaster, has worked with Alfred University since 2000 to shine a spotlight on family-owned businesses. For the past thirteen years, they have presented the Galanis Awards for Excellence in Family Business, honoring nearly 70 family firms.
Terry Galanis Jr., president of Sealing Devices, said the list of award-winners, as well as the nominees in general, speak to the quality of family businesses prevalent in the WNY area. “As usual, this program keeps getting better and better and this year is no different. We had a great group to choose from,” he said, noting that 16 firms were nominated for the awards this year. “What we have is a very diverse group that covers manufacturing, construction and support services. We have a very good mix.”
The criteria for choosing the award winners-financial stability, innovation, quality of life for employees, record of growth, and contributions to the community-are evident in any successful business, but especially in family-owned firms. Galanis Jr. said that the awards serve to recognize family businesses for the contributions they make to the communities across the region. “Small businesses represent the backbone of our country but they don’t always get much recognition” Galanis Jr. said. “Family business owners are responsible for the livelihood of so many people and are such a visible park of their communities. They’re looked up to, so it’s important that people see that they are doing.”
